Introduction

Some of the best experiences near Marrakesh sit an hour or two outside the city. In a single day you can trade the medina for Atlas peaks, a rocky desert at sunset, cascading waterfalls, or a Portuguese port on the Atlantic. This guide covers the day trips worth taking, what each one offers, and how to pick the right one for your trip.

What are the best day trips from Marrakesh?

The favourites are the Ourika Valley and High Atlas for mountains and greenery, the Agafay desert for a sunset close to the city, Ait Ben Haddou for film-set kasbahs, Essaouira for the coast, and the Ouzoud waterfalls for a full day out.

Most are doable in a day; a couple are better with an overnight. If you have limited time in the city itself first, see our things to do in Marrakesh.

Ourika Valley and the High Atlas

The closest escape into nature: about an hour south of Marrakesh, the Ourika Valley climbs into the Atlas past Berber villages, terraced fields and a series of waterfalls. It is green, cool and a complete change of pace from the medina.

Serious hikers push further to Imlil, the gateway to Mount Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak. For a day trip, Ourika is the easy win; Imlil rewards an early start.

The Agafay desert

If the Sahara is too far for your schedule, Agafay is the answer. This rocky, dune-like desert sits under an hour from Marrakesh and delivers a real desert atmosphere — camel or buggy rides, sunset dinners, and stylish camps — without the long drive south.

It is not the Sahara's towering dunes, and it is honest to say so. But for a sunset or an overnight close to the city, it is hard to beat. For the real dunes, see our guide on getting to Merzouga.

Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate

Cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass and you reach Ait Ben Haddou, the fortified earthen city you have seen in countless films, and Ouarzazate, the gateway to the south and home to Morocco's film studios.

It is a long day — roughly four hours each way — so an early start is essential, and many travellers prefer to fold it into a longer desert tour rather than rush it as a day trip.

Essaouira on the coast

For sea air and a slower pace, Essaouira is about three hours west — a breezy Atlantic port with a relaxed medina, ramparts, fresh seafood and one of the easiest atmospheres in the country.

It works as a long day trip, but Essaouira rewards an overnight if you can spare it — the town is at its best in the evening once the day-trippers leave.

Ouzoud waterfalls

The Ouzoud falls, near Azilal, are the tallest in Morocco — a dramatic 110-metre drop framed by olive groves, with resident Barbary macaques and boat rides at the base.

It is about two and a half hours each way, making a full but very rewarding day out, especially in spring when the flow is strongest.

How to choose

Short on time and want nature? Ourika. Want a desert feeling near the city? Agafay. After iconic scenery and kasbahs? Ait Ben Haddou. Prefer the coast? Essaouira. Chasing waterfalls? Ouzoud.

Several of these pair naturally into a longer route rather than separate day trips — tell us your dates and interests and we will build the itinerary around them.

Frequently asked questions

For most travellers the Ourika Valley (mountains and waterfalls, about an hour away) or the Agafay desert (a desert sunset under an hour away) are the best-value day trips. Ait Ben Haddou and Essaouira are longer but iconic.

No. The big dunes at Merzouga are 8 to 10 hours away and need at least three days. For a desert feeling in a day, visit the nearer Agafay desert instead.

About three hours each way by road. It works as a long day trip, but staying overnight is better as the town is quietest and most atmospheric in the evening.

Yes, but it is roughly four hours each way, so start early. Many travellers prefer to include it in a multi-day desert tour rather than rush it in a single day.
