Introduction
The single most common desert-tour mistake in Morocco is booking the closer option and arriving disappointed. Merzouga and Zagora are not interchangeable: one has the towering dune sea of the postcards, the other is quicker to reach but far more modest. This guide lays out the real difference so you choose the desert that matches your expectations and your time.
Merzouga vs Zagora: the short answer
If you want the tall, classic Sahara dunes, choose Merzouga (Erg Chebbi). If you are very short on time and just want a taste of the desert, Zagora is closer but its dunes are small. The scale difference is not subtle, and it is the main thing to get right.
For how to actually reach the big dunes, see our guide on getting from Marrakesh to Merzouga.
| Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) | Zagora | |
|---|---|---|
| Dune size | Up to ~150 m — true dune sea | Small, scattered |
| Drive from Marrakesh | 8–10 hours | ~7 hours |

Merzouga vs Zagora at a glance.
The dunes: this is the real difference
Merzouga sits at the edge of Erg Chebbi, a genuine dune sea with peaks rising up to around 150 metres — the towering, sculpted sand of the imagination. Zagora's dunes are far smaller and more scattered; many travellers arrive expecting Erg Chebbi and feel let down.
If the dunes are the reason you are going to the desert at all, this single point should decide it.
Distance and driving time
Zagora's advantage is proximity. From Marrakesh it is roughly a 7-hour drive, versus 8 to 10 hours to Merzouga. That gap is what makes Zagora sellable as a 2-day trip and Merzouga a 3-day one.
But the extra distance to Merzouga buys you the far better landscape — and the road there, over the Tizi n'Tichka and through the gorges, is more scenic too.
How many days you need
Zagora can be done in two days, though it is rushed. Merzouga needs three at minimum to avoid spending the whole trip in the car — one day down, a full day at the dunes, one day back.
Our 5-day Morocco itinerary and the how-many-days guide show how the desert fits into a wider trip.

What about Agafay and Erg Chigaga?
Two other names come up. Agafay is not really a sand desert — it is a rocky, dune-like plateau under an hour from Marrakesh, ideal for a sunset or overnight when you have no time to go south. Erg Chigaga, beyond Zagora, is a large, remote dune field that rivals Erg Chebbi but needs a long 4x4 approach and more days.
For most first-timers the choice is still Merzouga for the dunes, or Agafay for convenience.
So which should you choose?
Choose Merzouga if the towering dunes are your priority and you can give the desert three days. Choose Zagora only if two days is genuinely all you have and you accept smaller dunes. Choose Agafay if you want a desert night without leaving the Marrakesh region.
