Introduction

The Agafay desert has become one of the most popular escapes from Marrakesh, and for good reason: it delivers a real desert atmosphere — camps, camel rides, sunset dinners — under an hour from the city. It is not the Sahara, and it is honest to say so. This guide explains what Agafay actually is, how it compares to the real dunes, and how to make the most of a visit.

What is the Agafay desert?

Agafay is a rocky, arid plateau of rolling grey-gold hills about 30 to 40 kilometres from Marrakesh — under an hour by road. It looks dune-like from a distance but has no real sand dunes; its appeal is the wide-open desert feel, the silence, and the Atlas Mountains on the horizon.

It has boomed as a destination because it offers the desert experience — camps, stargazing, camel and quad rides — without the long drive south to the Sahara.

Agafay vs the Sahara: the honest comparison

This is the key thing to understand before you go. Agafay is close and convenient but it is a stony desert, not a sand sea. The towering dunes people picture are at Merzouga (Erg Chebbi), 8 to 10 hours away.

If your dream is the classic Sahara dunes, Agafay will not replace them — see our guides on Merzouga vs Zagora and getting to Merzouga. If you simply want a desert night near the city, Agafay is ideal.

Things to do in Agafay

Agafay is built around experiences rather than sights. The most popular are sunset dinners with Atlas views, overnight stays in desert camps from simple to luxury, camel and horse rides, quad biking and buggies, and stargazing far from city light.

Many visitors come for a single memorable evening; others stay the night to catch both sunset and sunrise over the hills.

Sunset visit or overnight?

A sunset trip is the easy win: leave Marrakesh in the afternoon, enjoy an activity and dinner as the light drops, and return the same night. An overnight adds the quiet of the desert after dark, the stars, and sunrise — worth it if you want more than a few hours.

Either way, bring a warm layer: like all deserts, Agafay is cold after sunset even when the day was hot.

When to go and how to plan

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable; summer days are very hot and winter nights are cold. Whatever the season, evenings are cool. Our guide to the best time to visit Morocco has the detail. Agafay pairs easily with a few days in the city — tell us your dates and we will fit it in.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, if you want a desert atmosphere near Marrakesh — sunset dinners, camps and camel rides under an hour from the city. It is not the Sahara's sand dunes, so manage expectations on that.

About 30 to 40 km, or under an hour by road, which is exactly why it is so popular as a half-day or overnight trip.

It is a rocky, arid, dune-like plateau rather than a sand desert. It feels like a desert and has camps and activities, but the tall sand dunes are at Merzouga in the Sahara.

Choose Agafay for convenience and a desert night near Marrakesh; choose the Sahara at Merzouga if the towering sand dunes are your priority and you can spare at least three days.
