Introduction

Fez is Morocco's oldest imperial city and its cultural heart — a living medieval medina of some 9,000 lanes, ancient madrasas, and the famous tanneries. It rewards slow wandering more than a checklist. This guide covers what to see, how long to stay, and the day trips that pair well with it.

What to do in Fez

The heart of Fez is Fes el-Bali, the walled old medina — the largest car-free urban area in the world. Beyond it, the highlights are the tanneries, the historic madrasas, and the craft workshops. Two full days lets you see the essentials without rushing.

For the city in context, see our Fez destination guide.

The medina and the tanneries

Getting lost in Fes el-Bali is the experience, not a mistake — the lanes are a maze by design. The Chouara tanneries are the iconic sight: leather dyed in stone pits as it has been for centuries, best viewed from the surrounding leather shops' terraces (they'll offer a sprig of mint for the smell).

Explore in daylight, keep valuables secure, and decline unofficial guides who approach you first, as covered in our is Morocco safe guide.

Madrasas, monuments and crafts

The Bou Inania and Al-Attarine madrasas show Marinid craftsmanship at its finest — carved cedar, stucco and zellij. The Bab Bou Jeloud (the Blue Gate) is the grand entrance to the medina, and the University of al-Qarawiyyin is considered the oldest continuously operating university in the world.

Fez is also Morocco's craft capital: ceramics, leather and brass are made and sold in dedicated souks.

Day trips from Fez

Fez is a great base for the north. Meknes and the Roman ruins of Volubilis make an easy day trip, as does the mountain town of Ifrane. Chefchaouen, the blue city, is around four hours away — doable in a long day but better as an overnight (see our Chefchaouen day-trip guide).

Fez is also a common start or end point for a wider Morocco itinerary.

How long to stay and when to go

Two days covers the medina and monuments; three lets you add a day trip. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable — see the best time to visit Morocco. Summer inland is hot, winter is mild but cool at night.

Two full days for the medina, tanneries and madrasas; three if you want a day trip to Meknes and Volubilis or Ifrane.

Yes. It is busy and maze-like rather than dangerous. Explore in daylight, keep valuables secure, and decline unofficial guides who approach you first.

The world's largest car-free medieval medina, the Chouara tanneries, its historic madrasas and al-Qarawiyyin university, and its craft traditions in leather, ceramics and brass.

It is about four hours each way, so it is a long day trip. Many travellers prefer to stay overnight in Chefchaouen instead.
